We should want something else more than success.
Mrs. What is Up and I are listening to the Divergent book series and in reading a review, I came across a quote from Veronica Roth, author. It really resonated with me and I wanted to share it.
“Want something else more than success. Success is a lovely thing, but your desire to say something, your worth, and your identity shouldn’t rely on it, because it’s not guaranteed and it’s not permanent and it’s not sufficient.”
I think this is extremely profound and something that as musicians we can all take to heart. It’s not enough to just want to be successful because there will be so many times where you simply won’t be. And if the primary contingency of your happiness is the success itself (and not the love of the craft) then you will soon find yourself miserable. When success does come but you don’t have a deep love for the craft, then to have to continue that craft in order to maintain your success (happiness) will become a soul-crushing burden that will undermine your tenuous success-based happiness.
What do you think?
