Transcription – “Speed of Sound” by Coldplay
This is easily one of my favorite drum parts of all pop-dom, and Will Champion’s performance on this track is marvelous.
It features a repeated rhythm (an ostinato) between the kick, snare, and top tom throughout the entire track that is loads of fun to play.
The biggest trick is deciding how to best tackle the various “ride” instruments while keeping this ostinato flowing.
In the verse 1 and the interludes, you’ll be be riding on the floor tom as shown below. This leaves your left hand (assuming a right-handed kit) to run the repeated figure.
However, when you get to the subsequent verses, you’ll switch the ride pattern from the floor tom to hi-hat. This means that in order to not cross arms, you’ll need to switch to an open-handed position and play the ostinato with your right hand and the 8th note hats with your left hand.
Your brain will probably fight you on this, but you tell that organ who’s boss! We hope you enjoy this month’s transcription! Difficulty level: 4/10
