“Mr. Bongo” drums on at 96
Legendary Latin-jazz percussionist Jack Costanzo may be 96, but he can play like he’s in his prime. He’s collaborated with artists like Nat King Cole, Dizzy Gillespie, Elvis Presley, Sam Cooke, and even Barbra Streisand. The self-taught superstar became friends with several actors in L.A, and knew quite a few of them personally. Here’s what he had to say about Marlon Brando:
Marlon was a dear friend, and someone who always supported a worthy (political or social) cause. I never gave him a lesson. He played very well as a non-professional musician. When I did ‘Guys and Dolls’ with Marlon, we did a lot of stuff during the breaks and played a lot of music together.
