I’m sure we’ve all seen or heard Matt Sorum playing a Guns & Roses song before, but probably not quite like this. Read more
Former Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum joined cellist Yo-Yo Ma on Capitol Hill on Tuesday to urge lawmakers to increase funding for the arts in a year of deep federal budget cuts.
The rocker and classical musician played a jam session briefly together for a gathering of legislators and arts advocates from across the country who planned to visit congressional offices. They performed with bagpiper Cristina Pato and dancing star Lil Buck.
If there’s any drummer who can claim they’ve come from the rock and roll jungle it’s Matt Sorum. With seven years under his belt, he’s the longest sitting Guns N’ Roses drummer ever. Matt Sorum was ejected from the band by Axl Rose after he defended Slash’s decision to leave. So along with Slash and former Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan they formed Velvet Revolver… which is now on hiatus because their lead singer left the band. Lead singer issues aside, Matt Sorum is a road tested rock drummer and well qualified to speak on the topic of rock drumming. Read more
One wouldn’t normally associate MATT SORUM with charity events in Third World countries. But on July 6th, the notoriously hard-partying drummer for THE CULT, GUNS N’ ROSES and most recently VELVET REVOLVER will take part in a special all-star benefit concert in Kenya, Africa. The concert will close out a weekend-long event organized by the Kenya Believe It Committee, which distributes funds to various community projects focused on maintaining sustainability. Sorum says, “This is an experience I am truly honored to be a part of. I feel at this time in my life, I want to give back and help people in need.”
A few weeks ago, we reported that Velvet Revolver got rid of their former lead singer, Scott Weiland. Now, it appears as if the band is using the Internet to recruit a new front man. According to Billboard:
Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash tells Billboard.com that the band is creating a web site to audition singers. The new site will help Velvet Revolver replace Scott Weiland, whose April 1 dismissal from the band continued the public feud between the ex-frontman and his former bandmates.
“The band is actually talking about building a Web site [and] doing some auditions via that, so that’s been something that’s developing at this point,” Slash explains, noting that it should be happening “in the next month or so.”
There has been an online feud for a few weeks between Velvet Revolver’s Matt Sorum and lead singer (and Stone Temple Pilot front man) Scott Weiland tat stemmed from an altercation during a gig in Glasgow, Scotland.
It appears now that this was the beginning of the end as VR has officially offed the vocalist. Sorum wrote on his blog:
“[We] had a little band turmoil onstage, as you probably all could tell,” he wrote. “Being in a band is a lot like being in a relationship. Sometimes, you just don’t get along. I guess there has been more turmoil lately, with the cancellations and all. It has been frustrating; I am not going to lie. My career and life in rock and roll has come with its ups and downs. Unfortunately, some people in this business don’t realize how great of a life they have. Touring the world, meeting great people, and fans all over the world – and just playing music for a living. I feel truly blessed. But sometimes the road can be draining for some.
Here’s a play from the Matt Sorum book of marketing. Charlie Benante, better known to the drumming world as Anthrax’s drummer, is now pushing his own line of coffee offered through Legends Cup Coffee. Man, drummers will come outwith a signature ANYTHING! What’s next, Joey Jordison’s Vienna Sausages? Besides, does anyone really want to drink coffee with the word “anthrax” on the label?
You all know me, you know how I earn a living. When I’m not bashing on my drums to the sounds of ANTHRAX, I like to enjoy a good cup of Coffee. I will drink it hot, iced, frapped and intravenously. I’ve been all around the world, tried many different blends and I have come up with some combinations that Kick ***. If you are a coffee drinker, I think you’re going to Love it.
He offers it by the pound or you can join his “Coffee Crew” (aka: coffee subscription) for just $20 a month! I dunno .. it just seems more difficult to take him seriously now. If you want to try it, you can find out more …
